Thandi during an after-school literacy session supported by LICEDO.
From falling behind to leading the class
Thandi, a 10-year-old learner from Mzuzu, had missed several weeks of school while caring for a younger sibling. When she returned, she struggled to read at her grade level and her confidence was low.
Through our ECD and education support, Thandi received age-appropriate books, a study kit, and regular mentoring from a community volunteer. She joined an after-school reading club where sessions focused on phonics, comprehension, and playful learning.
“I didn’t like reading before, but now I want to read every day.”
— Thandi
What changed
- Attendance improved by 40% within the first term.
- Literacy scores doubled on school assessments.
- Confidence grew—Thandi now reads aloud during class and helps peers.
How support reached Thandi
LICEDO partnered with the school and parents to design a simple, consistent plan:
- Enrolled Thandi in a daily 45-minute reading club.
- Provided a personal reading kit (storybooks, notebook, pencil set).
- Held monthly check-ins with her caregiver and class teacher.
Today, Thandi is among the top readers in her class. Her story reflects what’s possible when communities, schools, and families work together.
